The KICKR RUN has its own user interface for local control, made up of the Speed and Grade paddles, Stop and RunFree buttons, and app contextual buttons and simple data display. The KICKR RUN does not record any run data, however.
The KICKR RUN supports wired (Direct Connect) and wireless (Bluetooth and Wi-Fi) connections for remote data recording and control by the Wahoo app for iOS and Android and various third party apps and devices.
KICKR RUN supports several types of data recording and control, including

device-free control
You can use just the paddles and buttons on the RUN to control the RUN, without recording your run session on any separate apps or devices.

You can connect the RUN to a separate app or device to display and records data from a run session, but the RUN is controlled using the paddles and buttons on the RUN.

You can have a separate app or device connect to the RUN and control either the belt speed and/or deck incline and record data from from a run session.
Different apps and devices have different capabilities in regard to recording data or controlling different aspects of the KICKR RUN.
Device-free control
As mentioned above, the KICKR RUN can be used (controlled manually) without the presence of any external app or device.
Components of treadmill control include:
Belt Speed, normally calculated as Pace
Deck Grade
Lateral movement in the form of semi-randomized vertical and lateral (left-right) pitch changes of the deck at .5 degree increments at 10 second intervals, used to enable terrain simulation mode. For more information, see Terrain simulation mode [RUN].
Manual control
You can directly manipulate the treadmill’s belt speed (displayed as pace) and the treadmill’s deck grade using the treadmill’s Speed and Grade paddles. For additional information on manual control, see Manual control mode [RUN].
RunFree mode
You can also directly control the KICKR RUN's belt speed using its signature RunFree mode.
After reaching a minimum pace of 20 min/mi (12.5 min/km), the RUN can be set into RunFree mode, where the optical Time of Flight sensor, located in the center of the console (just below the Stop button), will measure the distance between your torso and the sensor and change the speed of the belt to keep your torso a fixed distance from the console (speeding up as you get closer and slowing as you move farther away), effectively allowing you to control the speed of the treadmill simply by changing your running pace.
For the best experience, press the RunFree button only after [1] you have reached a comfortable running pace in your normal running position and [2] you are located on the deck where you can reach the Stop and RunFree buttons, but only with your arm fully extended. This will ensure that you are centered on the deck and have sufficient room for full strides.

Terrain simulation mode
Terrain simulation mode is setting that can be toggled on for a run session in the Wahoo app to enable semi-randomized vertical and lateral (left-right) pitch changes of the deck at .5 degree increments at 10 second intervals before the RUN is used without an app/device, with the Wahoo app, or with a third party app or device. Terrain simulation mode is designed [1] to reduce the fatigue of repetitive motion caused by foot contact at the same angle of the treadmill deck and [2] to simulate the experience of varied surfaces when running outdoors. Passive app/device recording
While being manually controlled using the onboard paddles and buttons, you can connect the KICKR RUN to a compatible app or device to transmit running data to be displayed and recorded.
Data transmission
The KICKR RUN supports wired (Direct Connect) and wireless (Bluetooth and Wi-Fi) connections for remote data recording and control. When connected, the KICKR RUN will transmit the following data that can be displayed and/or recorded on a compatible app or device:
- Speed, generally presented as Pace
- Grade
- Cadence
- Ground Contact Time
- Vertical Oscillation
Recording the RUN in Passive mode in the Wahoo app
You can pair the KICKR RUN (and a heart rate monitor) to the Wahoo app's in-app activity recorder using the Treadmill Running workout profile to display and record data from a run. Setting the control mode of the RUN into Passive mode, the Wahoo app will not send any commands to the KICKR RUN, but will display and record data from the treadmill, whether also connected to an additional app or not.
To record a run in passive mode in the Wahoo app:
With your KICKR RUN connected to the Wahoo app
- Navigate to the Record tab at the bottom of the main page
- A Data sources panel will pop up, showing potentially connected devices
- From the drop-down menu located at the top this panel, select Treadmill Running.
- Close the Data sources panel by selecting the X or swiping down from the top of the screen.
- Select the Start button, and your phone/tablet will display and record data from the treadmill.
- Start your run on the KICKR RUN.
Remotely control the RUN
You can also connect the KICKR RUN to other apps or devices and remotely control the belt speed and/or deck incline and record data from a run session automatically. Various apps and devices differ in their capabilities for control, depending on the control mode and how they have integrated with the RUN.
Remote control generally falls into two categories: [1] structured workouts or [2] free running in simulated running environments.
Structured (Planned) Workouts
Structured workouts, often also called "planned workouts", can be loaded into an app to to automatically control the KICKR RUN’s belt speed and deck grade (if grade changes are prescribed in the workout) according to the changing intervals in the workout. As a matter of safety, changes to the belt speed at an interval change point must be confirmed using the speed paddle, ensuring that you are aware of the belt speed and/or grade change about to occur.
Control KICKR RUN in the Wahoo app with a planned workout
The Wahoo app offers the ability to control KICKR RUN in the in-app workout recorder by loading indoor running workouts provided with the Wahoo Pro subscription or properly configured workouts synced from a third party workout provider like TrainingPeaks.

Simulated environments
Various third party apps offer virtual running environments, and the Wahoo app offers route simulation. In these virtual environments/simulated courses, the app will control the grade of the KICKR RUN, automatically changing incline of the deck to correspond to the incline of the virtual/simulated running surface as you progress through the course, either running at a pace manually controlled with paddles or using RunFree mode. The app may offer visual media to match the terrain changes of the route.
Simulate a route on KICKR RUN in the Wahoo app
In the Wahoo app, with a Core or Pro Wahoo subscription, you can simulate a route you have imported as a file, or synced from a third party service or one of the routes Wahoo has curated. The in-app will control the grade of the KICKR RUN's deck as you control belt speed manually using the paddles or RunFree mode and provide a real-time view of data, the topographic profile, or a simplified map view of the route.

Third party device recording
COROS watch run recording
Currently COROS watches are the only third party devices capable of connecting to and recording full data values from the KICKR RUN. When connected to a COROS APEX 2/2 Pro/4, PACE 3/4/Pro, NOMAD, or VERTIX 2/2S, the KICKR RUN transmits pace (as speed), cadence, ground contact and grade data.

Several apps/training platforms can provide structured running workouts that can be synced into the Wahoo app to control the KICKR RUN automatically and record the session.

Final Surge offers a library and workout builder for structured running workouts to be completed with KICKR RUN in the Wahoo app. Final Surge does not interface with the KICKR RUN directly for recording or control.

TrainingPeaks
TrainingPeaks offers a library and workout builder for structured running workouts to be completed with KICKR RUN in the Wahoo app. It does not interface with the KICKR RUN directly for recording or control. NOTE: TrainingPeaks Virtual is not compatible with RUN.

Zwift offers a library and workout builder for structured workouts that can be completed in the Zwift app.
NOTE: Zwift cannot control pace in structured workout mode in the way that the Wahoo app does. Zwift also offers a virtual running environment with pace (as speed), cadence, and grade data recording and automatic grade control in the Zwift app.
