What is it?
In order to reduce fatigue from repetitive motion and to better simulate the outdoor running experience, KICKR RUN is equipped with Terrain mode. When Terrain mode is enabled in the Wahoo app, the KICKR RUN can be set to adjust [1] the lateral tilt or [2] the lateral tilt and vertical grade of the treadmill deck by .5 degrees on 30 second intervals. This very mild shift in position of the treadmill deck helps to change your foot contact patterns, simulating the slight differences in ground position and angle experienced when running outside, and mitigating the fatigue often produced by the repetitive contact of running on a traditional treadmill.
How does it work?
When lateral tilt is enabled, every 30 seconds, the KICKR RUN will change the deck angle between one of three positions [1] .5 degrees left side up / right down, [2] level, or [3] .5 degrees right side up / left down.
When lateral tilt and vertical grade is enabled, the KICKR RUN will also add in variations of relative fore/aft vertical shifts, [1] .5 degrees front up / rear down, [2] 'level', and [3] .5 degrees rear up / front down, relative to the current target grade. Terrain mode vertical grade adjustments can be engaged while following a structured running workout with separate grade targets. If the deck of the treadmill is at a grade other than level, that target grade will be the centerpoint of the .5 degree variations.
How to use it?
- Pair a KICKR RUN to the Wahoo app.
- For details, see Pair a sensor [Wahoo app]
- Select the Record tab.
- Select the Treadmill Running workout profile at the top of the page just below Data Sources.
- Before, or after starting the activity recording, select the Control button at the bottom right.
- Select Lateral or Lateral and vertical.
- Exit the Control menu and continue or begin your run.
The KICKR RUN will adjust the angle of the deck every 30 second interval, as described above.
Notes
- Terrain simulation mode is currently only supported in the Wahoo app.
- Terrain simulation mode will time out 3 minutes after a KICKR RUN is no longer being controlled by a Wahoo app instance with terrain simulation mode toggled on.
- The KICKR RUN will auto-level the deck after 6 hours of inactivity, or when turned on.
- To level the deck, turn the power switch to off, wait 10 seconds, and turn the power switch back on.
- A user's terrain simulation mode preferences are saved in the Wahoo app, and so when a user re-connects to the KICKR RUN, terrain mode will already be enabled for their next use.
- Each user / Wahoo app instance has it's own preference remembered in the Wahoo app.
