Connecting a Smart Controllable Trainer (ANT+)

This article will provide instructions for connecting a Smart Controllable Trainer to the app.  If you are unsure what kind of trainer you have, or how to connect, please refer to our Connect your Trainer (Compatibility Tool) to find out how to connect your trainer.

Please note that ANT+ connections will require the use of an ANT+ dongle and are only available on Mac and Windows.  Please see this article to learn more about ANT+ connections.

In order for the app to report data and control the trainer,  trainers and sensors will need to be connected to the app from the device connections screen in the workout player.

Select your workout from the Library and press the Start Workout button.

This will launch the Device Connections screen.  If your screen does not open automatically, please tap the gear icon in the top right corner of your page.  Please ensure that your screen shows that ANT+ is ON.

Plug your trainer in and activate your sensors then click the Add Devices button on your screen.  Cadence sensors will require you to spin the cranks, heart rate monitors will require you to be wearing them.  Moistening the leads on the heart rate monitor strap can help if your sensor doesn't show up in the device list.

Selecting and Connecting your Trainer

Clicking on the Add Devices button will open up the left-hand panel of the Device Connections screen.  You should see multiple connections available for your trainer.  Selecting the correct one is essential for proper trainer control. Select_your_trainer_ANT.png

ANT_icon.pngThe ANT+ icon before the ID number will show that this is an ANT+ connection. The matching ID numbers show that the connections are to the same device.  The FE-C Bike Trainer connection (Fitness Equipment Control) is the one you want to select for the app to be able to interact with and control your trainer.  The Bike Power connection will only report power and will not offer any control.  Please be sure to choose the FE-C connection ONLY.  Click on the Connect link in the FE-C Bike Trainer box.

The trainer should now appear in the right-hand panel of the Device Connections screen.  Once the trainer is connected, the box will turn white.  The icons may be green (ON) or white (OFF)

Trainer_control_icon.pngThis is the Control Icon.  This icon will need to appear and be selected for the app to have interactive control of your trainer.

power_icon.pngThis is the Power Icon.  This icon will need to appear and be selected for the app to report power from your trainer to the screen.  Please note that both the Power and Control icons must be from the same device for the app to work properly.

cadence_icon.pngThis is the Cadence Icon.  If your trainer has integrated cadence sensing, this icon will appear.  You may choose to connect an external cadence sensor instead.

speed_icon.pngThis is the Speed Icon.  Your trainer can report speed to the app, however, we recommend that you choose to use the app's virtual speed.  For more information, see the following article:  Understanding Virtual Speed Calculations.

slope_icon.pngIf you are connecting a Wahoo KICKR Bike or a Wahoo trainer with a KICKR Climb, you will see a Slope Icon appear on your screen.  Selecting the Slope Icon and unlocking the Climb function on your device will allow the trainer to follow the workout gradient.  For more information, see the following article:  The KICKR Climb
