This is an overview of the different types of trainers that can be used with the SYSTM app. To find out if your trainer is compatible with the app, see Compatible Trainers [SYSTM].
A smart controllable trainer/stationary bike
- The app will connect to the trainer using Bluetooth or ANT+.
- The trainer will transmit power data to the app.
- The app will control the trainer's resistance.
- These trainers will function in ERG and Level Mode.
For Bluetooth connection instructions, see Connecting a Smart Controllable Trainer (Bluetooth)
For ANT+ connection instructions, see Connecting a Smart Controllable Trainer (ANT+)
A smart non-controllable trainer/stationary bike
- The app will connect to the trainer.
- The trainer will transmit power data to the app.
- The app cannot control the trainer's resistance.
- Resistance must be changed by shifting gears, or adjusting the tension (stationary bike).
For Bluetooth connection instructions, see Connecting a Smart (non-controllable) Trainer or Power Meter (Bluetooth)
For ANT+ connection instructions, see Connecting a Smart (non-controllable) Trainer or Power Meter (ANT+)
A classic trainer with a power meter
- The app will connect to the power meter to transmit data.
- The app cannot control the trainer's resistance.
- Resistance must be changed by shifting gears on the bike.
- The trainer may have different resistance curves available, depending on the make and model.
See Power Meter and Smart Trainer connections
A classic trainer with a speed sensor configured for Virtual Watts.
- The app will connect to the speed sensor to speed data. Virtual Watts will need to be configured within the app settings for power data to be available.
- The app cannot control the trainer's resistance.
- Resistance must be changed by shifting gears on the bike.
- The trainer may have different resistance curves available, depending on the make and model. Virtual Watts are power estimates and may not be comparable to power measured with a power meter.
For Bluetooth connection instructions, see Connecting a Classic (non-smart) Trainer using Virtual Watts (Bluetooth)
For ANT+ connection instructions, see Connecting a Classic (non-smart) Trainer using Virtual Watts (ANT+)
A stationary bike that doesn't connect
- Stationary bikes that are not supported by the app connections can still be used for training, using RPE.
See How to use an unsupported stationary bike with SYSTM.
