Planned Workouts in the Wahoo App for Apple Watch

What are planned workouts?

Planned Workouts are structured workouts that are part of a larger training plan that can be imported into and completed in the Wahoo app's workout player. Typically built on training plan sites such as Training Peaks or sourced from our SYSTM app, planned workouts usually involve a set of intervals with power, heart rate, rate of perceived exertion (RPE), or speed targets.

Supported workout profiles for Planned Workouts in the Wahoo app on Apple Watch are Cycling (indoor and outdoor), Running (indoor and outdoor), Strength, and Swimming

For the full details on Planned Workouts in the Wahoo app (not on Apple Watch) see Planned Workouts in the Wahoo app.

Load a Workout

The Wahoo app on Apple Watch is designed to make it quick and easy to load a planned workout that has been synced to the Wahoo Cloud.

To access Planned Workouts, select the workout profile from the Home page for the activity type you want to start.

If you have a Planned Workout scheduled for today, it will appear before the Ready to Workout page and you can Select or Skip it, using the provided buttons.

If you skip it, or you do not have a planned workout scheduled for today, you can still access all Planned Workouts for this week by selecting the Planned Workouts button from the Ready to Record page.

Execute a Planned Workout

Once a Planned Workout is loaded and the start button is pressed, you will see the 3 second countdown the workout start (if this option is toggled on in the workout settings).

The Planned Workout data page will appear in the page stack of the selected Workout Profile. For more information on setting up workout profiles see Customize workout profiles and pages in the Wahoo app for Apple Watch.

Interval targets

When a Planned Workout has been loaded to the Apple Watch, the Start page will display the Planned Workout icon in green.

When the Start button is pressed, the workout will begin and a panel with the Planned Workout target (pace / power / hr / RPE) will appear.  This will auto-dismiss in ~6 seconds or can be manually dismissed by selecting the X in the upper left hand corner.

Once dismissed, you will still be able to see the target at the top of the Planned Workout data page.

The background color of the Planned Workout data page will be colored accordingly to how you are performing based on the workout target.

  2. Green: On target
  3. Purple: Above/over target

Data fields

The Planned Workout data page presents the primary target value for the current interval and your current output toward that target (target power), a secondary target value if one was loaded (eg target cadence), four customizable text data fields, a zoomable view of the structured workout graph showing the intervals in context.

Use the Apple Watch digital crown to scroll between the interval target values and view the workout's interval graph at different zoom levels.

The default data fields for the Planned Workout page are different for Cycling type vs Running type: Workout Profiles:

Cycling

  • Target Power + Current Power OR Target Cadence + Current Cadence
  • Target Heart Rate
  • Target RPE
  • Remaining Time/Distance - Interval
  • Remaining Time/Distance - Workout

Running

  • Target Pace, Target Cadence
  • Target Heartrate
  • Target RPE
  • Remaining Time/Distance - Interval
  • Remaining Time/Distance - Workout

Navigate the Planned Workouts Page

The Planned Workout page does not include the Perfect Zoom functionality of the other data pages in the Wahoo app for Apple Watch. Instead, the digital crown will allow you to scroll up and down on the page.

If there is more than one target value type for an interval in the loaded workout (eg. target power AND cadence) you can scroll between the primary and secondary target values.

Up to four data fields will remain on screen as you toggle between the workout's target values. These will be the first four data fields set for that Workout Profile's Planned Workouts page.

The next scroll will take you down to the workout's interval graph, which shows the current interval and your place in it with a white triangle and vertical line and presents the interval control buttons, which allow you to move backward/forward in the intervals of the workout (allows for skipping intervals, etc.)

The next 2 scrolls will zoom out to a wider view of the workout interval graph.

  2. Select the Forward or Back button to move between intervals. This will bring up a blue dashed line to indicate the current location of your selection. Use the Forward or Back buttons to move between intervals to your preferred interval.
  3. Use the Check button to select your preferred interval.  The workout will resume at the start of the interval you choose.
