Use CORE body temperature sensor with ELEMNT ACE, BOLT 3, and ROAM 3

When paired to a CORE body temperature sensor, your ELEMNT computer is able to present a variety of data values while in ride, including Skin Temperature, core Body Temperature, heat strain index (HSI), and heat zone.  The computer also records Skin Temperature, Body Temperature, and Heat Strain Index values into the FIT files.

There is no post-ride data visualization of body temperature data on your ELEMNT computer or in the Wahoo app.  CORE temperature data written into the FIT file can be reviewed on a variety of third party platforms.

The CORE body temperature sensor possesses its own onboard memory to store temperature data and can independently sync data with its app following a completed activity.

The integration with CORE body temperature sensors supports the presentation and transfer to FIT files of:

  • Skin Temperature - Temperature of the skin at the sensor

  • Body Temperature - Calculated internal body temperature

  • Heat Strain Index (HSI) – A composite metric combining body temperature and skin temperature trends to quantify overall heat stress and physiological strain during training or racing.

  • Heat Zone – A simplified visual indicator of an athlete’s thermal state (e.g., green to red scale), based on real-time body temperature thresholds and environmental conditions, correlated to their current Heat Strain Index values.

Requirements

  • ELEMNT ACE, BOLT 3, or ROAM 3, updated to current firmware
    • minimum 302533
  • Wahoo app on the latest version
    • minimum 6.86.0 (iOS) / 6.86.1 (Android)
  • CORE body temperature sensor (paired and worn correctly)
  • An active Bluetooth connection between your ELEMNT computer and the CORE body sensor must be maintained to display data on the ELEMNT and for data to be recorded in the FIT file.

Setup

  1. Set up your CORE body temperature sensor with the CORE app.

  2. Ensure your computer is up to date on firmware.
For details on how to update ELEMNT firmware, see Update firmware on ELEMNT ACE, BOLT 3, or ROAM 3.

  3. Awaken the CORE sensor.

  4. Pair your CORE sensor with the ELEMNT computer.

  1. Add the Heat Zone and Heat Strain Index, or other Skin Temperature or Body Temperature data fields to your preferred workout profile(s).

    • Wahoo app > Devices tab > Select your ELEMNT device > Workout profiles > Select your chosen workout profile > Pages > Select your chosen data page > add/replace data field > Body temperature > Select your preferred data field
For more details on customizing data fields on ELEMNT computers, see Customize workout profiles and pages for ELEMNT ACE, BOLT 3, or ROAM 3.

  • Available data field options are:

    • Heat Strain Index

    • Heat Strain Index Colored

    • Heat Zone Graph

    • Heat Zone Graph + HSI

    • Heat Time in Zone 1

    • Heat Time in Zone 2

    • Heat Time in Zone 3

    • Heat Time in Zone 4

    • Body Temp – simple text fields, no background color

      • Body Temp – current

      • Avg Body Temp (workout)

      • Max Body Temp (workout)

      • Min Body Temp (workout)

  1. Ensure your ELEMNT is connected to the Wahoo app to sync any data field changes.

  2. Wear the CORE sensor according to its placement guidelines and confirm it shows as connected on the ELEMNT before starting your ride.

  3. Begin your ride. Heat Zone, Heat Strain Index, or other values will appear in real time on the configured page once the CORE sensor begins streaming data.

Use your CORE body sensor

Before a ride

  1. Awaken the CORE sensor before confirming it is connected to your computer.

  2. Ensure you have enabled data fields for body temperature related data in your chosen workout profile.

During a ride

Any of the selected data fields will appear as long as data as transmitting. Data values are only recorded to the FIT file while the computer is un-paused. Data transmitted during a pause will not be recorded to the FIT file.

  • Heat Strain Index (HSI) will appear as a value according to CORE’s scale, either on a white background or colored coordinated to CORE’s heat zones.

heatstrainindex-800.png
  • Heat Zone Graph will show a colored bar chart representing the time spent in each heat zone.

    • If used as a full width data field with ACE (first field on a page or others at certain zoom levels) the elapsed time spent in each zone will be shown under each zone’s bar.

    • Due to the screen size of ROAM 3 and BOLT 3, the time in zone is under the bar chart is not included.

  • Heat Zone Graph + HSI will show the same bar chart, with the current heat strain index value superimposed over the current heat zone you are in.

  • Time in Heat Zone X will provide the time spent in the selected zone as a text value over a white background.

  • The other data fields will be the text value over a white background.

After a ride

There is currently no post-ride data available on your ELEMNT device or in Wahoo app for body temperature data. The CORE sensor possesses its own onboard memory to store temperature data and can independently sync data with its app after a ride is complete.

There is no data synced between the Wahoo and CORE app/cloud platforms. The only connection is between a CORE sensor and ELEMNT computer during a ride.

Body temperature data recorded in the FIT file can be reviewed on a variety of third party platforms

Notes

  • CORE is BTLE and ANT+, but connects to ELEMNT as an ANT+ sensor.

  • CORE has onboard data storage and syncs directly to CORE app.

  • There is no post-ride data syncing between Wahoo ecosystem and the CORE app. Live data display and FIT file recording are the only features.

Troubleshooting

Heat Zone or HSI fields are not available to add in the Wahoo App

  • Ensure your ELEMNT firmware and Wahoo app are up to date on versions 302533 and 6.86.0 respectively.

  • Ensure that a CORE sensor has been paired at least once.
For details on how to update ELEMNT firmware, see Update firmware on ELEMNT ACE, BOLT 3, or ROAM 3.

Heat Zone or HSI fields show no data during a ride

  • Confirm the CORE Body Temperature sensor is powered on/awake, paired with the ELEMNT, and worn correctly. Check the Sensors menu on the ELEMNT to verify the CORE shows as connected. If the sensor is not connected, forget and re-pair.

Time-in-zone percentages don't sum to 100%

  • Percentages are calculated excluding periods of missing sensor data (e.g., when the CORE briefly disconnects). If a notable portion of the ride had no CORE data, the percentages will reflect only the time during which valid readings were recorded.
