Trainer control modes

Passive Mode

  • Allows your ELEMNT ACE, BOLT 3 or ROAM 3 to be used as a mounted display when riding a smart trainer paired to a 3rd party app.
  • The ELEMNT displays and independently records metrics from connected sensors during a workout.
  • This is the default mode when entering smart trainer control mode.

*Important note on Passive mode: Since this method pairs the ELEMNT to the trainer via Bluetooth, connecting a KICKR prior to v4 (2018) or a SNAP to another app will require an ANT+ connection to that app. To connect to another app via Bluetooth, ensure the Wahoo app is fully closed and unpaired, connect your trainer to the other app then follow the steps provided above to connect the ELEMNT ACE, BOLT 3 or ROAM 3 to the trainer via ANT+.

Level Mode

  • Select a difficulty level from 1 to 10 using the right side buttons.
  • Level mode applies a standard resistance curve to the trainer. The curve replicates outside riding- the faster you go, the greater the resistance.
  • In Level mode, you will need to shift gears to meet the power targets, unlike ERG mode where the trainer meets the power targets for you.

Resistance Mode

  • Resistance mode allows for fine-tuned direct control of the trainer's brake resistance from 0-100%. Unlike Target Power (ERG) mode, brake resistance remains constant regardless of speed or cadence until changed manually. Think of it like a manually controlled spin bike.

*Note on resistance mode: Due to brake design, Resistance mode is not available for BIKE and BIKE shift models.

Target Power Mode

  • Target Power Mode, also known as ERG mode, allows you to set your desired power output target and the trainer will adjust resistance to keep your effort at that power output, regardless of cadence or speed.
  • If your cadence slows, the trainer increases resistance to maintain the target power output.

Route Simulation

  • Route mode allows you to recreate rides or simulate a route on your KICKR with support of terrain features like hills and valleys.
  • To use Route mode, select Route at the bottom of the page > Select your desired route > Press center button to confirm route choice > The trainer resistance will now be determined by the gradient changes over the course of the route.

Planned Workout

  • Planned workout mode allows you to follow an uploaded planned workout, according to the resistance design of the workout. In most cases this will be ERG mode, but if there are no power targets, the trainer will not provide resistance.

Troubleshooting

Unable to pair trainer to ELEMNT

  1. Close all apps and reopen only target app.
  2. Reset (power cycle) trainer by unplugging it for 30-35 seconds, then replugging it back in.
  3. Connect the Wahoo app to the trainer.
  4. Review the advanced Bluetooth troubleshooting for iOS or Android
    1. iOS
    2. Android
  5. Confirm if the trainer is emitting a Bluetooth signal by downloading the LightBlue app (Bluetooth scanner)
    1. LightBlue iOS
    2. LightBlue Android
  6. Please review Cannot connect KICKR to an app or device for complete troubleshooting steps.
