ELEMNT, BOLT, and ROAM bike computers can receive and display power data in real time from Bluetooth or ANT+ enabled power meters. Power meters other than POWRLINK Zero automatically pair via ANT+ as described this article on how to pair sensors to ELEMNT, BOLT, or ROAM.
For Pioneer Power Meters compatible with Pioneer's Pedaling Monitor System, please see these instructions.
Compatibility
- All ELEMNT GPS computers (ELEMNT, BOLT, and ROAM models)
Requirements
- An ELEMNT GPS computer on current firmware
- The current ELEMNT app version
- A power meter that transmits via standard ANT+ or Bluetooth protocols
Incompatible power meters
- SRM PM6
- Polar Look Keo Power Pedals (v1)
- Other power meters which do not support standard Bluetooth or ANT+ connectivity
Pair a power meter
- Ensure the sensor is awake and near the computer.
- Navigate to the Menu page (tap left side button).
- Scroll down to Add Sensor (using right side buttons), and select Add (middle button).
- Select Save (middle button) once the correct sensor displays.
- If a different sensor is displayed that you do not wish to pair, select More (right button).
- Then scroll and Select the sensor type. If the correct sensor is still not present, select Back multiple times.
- If you do not already have power or cadence data fields present on your pages, select Yes when prompted to add any the most basic data fields to your computer's pages, or No to keep your current page layout unchanged. You can always modify the page layouts later.
Most dual-sided power meters come come from the factory with the right pedal (secondary) paired to the left pedal (primary). When pairing them to your computer, only the left pedal will appear, and may not indicate 'left'. Right side power data is transmitted from the right side pedal to the left side pedal, which sends both left and right side data to the computer. If you believe there is a pairing issue, forget, re-pair, and calibrate the pedals, and if unresolved, review the setup and pairing documentation from your pedal manufacturer.
Calibrate a power meter
While the ELEMNT, BOLT, or ROAM sends the calibration command and receives calibration data to and from power meters, it has no role in the calibration process itself.
- Wake up your power meter.
- Navigate to the Menu page (left side button) of the ELEMNT, BOLT, or ROAM.
- Scroll down to highlight your power meter in the Sensors list.
- Position your bike, crank, or pedals according the power meter manufacturer's directions for calibration and select Calib (left button).
- The computer will send the command and will notify you when calibration is complete.
Set up power or cadence related data pages
Once a power meter has been paired, the ELEMNT, BOLT, or ROAM can display 75 different data field related to power.
- In the ELEMNT app, select the Settings tab. Then select Pages.
- Select the page and data field position into which you want to insert the power data field.
- Scroll down to Power and select the data field you wish to use.
There are power fields available in the following categories (dependent on your power meter's capabilities):
- Power
- Power to weight
- Training Stress Score (TSS)
- Normalized Power (NP)
- Intensity Factor (IF)
- Power Balance (requires dual-sided power meter)
- Power Average over time
- Power Max over time
- Power Zone, time in zone, and zone graph
- Power Torque (requires a Pioneer Power Meter)
- Power as a percentage of FTP
- Power Pedaling dynamics (requires a Pioneer Power Meter)
Power fields with show zone color on BOLT v2 and ROAM v2 are found under Avg Power (X time interval - zone color).
Using a Pioneer Power Meter
Requirements:*
- ELEMNT updated to at least firmware WF48-2170, BOLT updated to at least WB15-2170, or ROAM on any firmware
- A Pioneer Power Meter that supports Pioneer's Pedaling Monitor System
- Pioneer Power Meter magnets, like those shown below, properly installed
*In Private ANT mode, Pioneer Power Meters may only be woken with properly installed magnets. If a Pioneer Power Meter sleeps in Private ANT mode without magnets installed, simply remove and re-insert the battery to wake the unit, then use the instructions below to return to normal ANT mode for standard power meter functionality. Normal ANT mode does not require magnets and enables wake-on-move, but disables the calibration, zero, and advanced metrics described below.
Setup
- Pair the Pioneer power meter like any other power meter using the process detailed above.
- Scroll to highlight the Pioneer Power line item, then select MORE (right button) to access additional settings.
- If this is your first time pairing, you will need to calibrate the unit for accurate pedal monitoring metrics. Note that calibration requires the Pioneer Power Meter to be in Private ANT mode (can be switched using the MODE SWITCH option, shown below).
- Scroll to select MAGNET CALIBRATION to calibrate by pedaling forward very slowly (one full pedal rotation roughly every 3-10 seconds) - note that it may take 2 or more rotations for the initial pass to register. A green light will appear on the power meter when a successful pass is performed.
If the ELEMNT computer exits magnet calibration before completing all 5 passes or if other issues are encountered with data, try switching to a different mode and back, or removing the Pioneer battery for 10 seconds to restart it, then reboot the computer and try again.
- Now that your power meter is calibrated, be sure to also set the zero by turning the pedals to the 12 and 6 o'clock (vertical) position and selecting MANUAL ZERO from the menu. When complete, press the left side button to exit the menu, then page to the newly added pedaling monitor system view to see advanced metrics, as shown below.
