ELEMNT, BOLT, and ROAM can pair with rear view radar systems (like the Wahoo TRACKR RADAR, Garmin Varia, or Trek Carback) following the same pairing procedure as any other Bluetooth or ANT+ sensor.
For information on using radar units with ELEMNT ACE, see Use ANT+ Rear View Radar sensors with ELEMNT ELEMNT ACE, BOLT 3, or ROAM 3.
Requirements
- ELEMNT, BOLT, or ROAM updated to current firmware.
- ROAM v2 or BOLT v2 to control light modes or use the auto light feature
- If using the first generation Garmin Varia, it must be also be updated to the newest firmware.
Radar Settings On ELEMNT computers
Once your ANT+ radar is paired, additional settings (including mute) may be accessed by opening the settings menu with the left side button and selecting MORE while the sensor is highlighted on the list. Toggle between the options below by pressing the right button with ALERT MODE highlighted.
Battery level
- Good - battery > 20%
- Low - batter < 20%
Alert mode
- ON - Radar and visual and audio alerts are ON.
- MUTE - Radar and visual alerts (radar lane) are ON, but audio alerts are muted / OFF.
- OFF - Radar function is turned off, removing visual alerts (radar lane) and audio alerts OFF.
Car Lane
- LEFT - Radar lane is on the left side of the screen
- RIGHT - Radar lane is on the right side of the screen
- LEFT LEDS - for devices with left side LEDs (ELEMNT, ROAM 1/2), car location and speed is represented by the left side LEDs
Top LEDs
- ON - Top LEDs are used as a part of radar visual alerts.
- OFF - Top LEDs are not used as a part of radar visual alerts.
Light Mode
(requires second generation computer, ROAM v2 or BOLT v2)
Dependent upon the radar's available preset light settings. (ex. Off, High steady, Low steady, High flash, low flash)
Auto light
(requires second generation computer, ROAM v2 or BOLT v2)
If the auto light feature is enabled (1S, 5S, or 10S), and the radar has a tail light, the light will default to off. When the radar senses a vehicle is approaching, the light will be turned on to the last light mode selected on the taillight or the computer* and remain illuminated for the period of time selected (1, 5, or 10 seconds) after the last vehicle in a sequence passes and then turn off. If the auto light feature is disabled (set to OFF), the currently selected light mode will perform as defined by the light mode.
- OFF - Light presents the last light mode selected on the light or computer,
- 1S - Light is off and turned on to the last light mode selected as a vehicle is approaching + 1 second.
- 5S - Light is off and turned on to the last light mode selected as a vehicle is approaching + 5 seconds
- 10S - Light is off and turned on to the last light mode selected as a vehicle is approaching + 10 seconds
*If used with a Wahoo TRACKR RADAR with the Quick alert light mode enabled, the light will turn on to a high flash mode while the vehicle is approaching, and return to the last light mode selected for the remaining 1, 5, or 10 seconds before turning off.
Varia Radar performance specifications (as defined by Garmin)
-
The radar detects approaching vehicles up to 140m (153 yards) away.
-
The approaching vehicle speed must be from 10 to 160 km/h (from 6 to 99 mph).
-
NOTE: The radar does not detect vehicles traveling at the same speed as your bike.
-
The radar beam width is 40 degrees. It provides radar coverage for typical bends in the road.
-
The radar can detect up to eight approaching vehicles.
-
The vehicle position moves up the column as a vehicle gets closer to your bike. The threat level changes color based on the potential level of threat.
- Green indicates no vehicle is detected.
- Amber indicates a vehicle is approaching.
-
Red indicates a vehicle is advancing at a high rate of speed.
-
A fast vehicle is detected (any vehicle faster than 90km/h (55mph) relative to the bike or any vehicle significantly faster than the average vehicle speed).
-
A slow-moving cyclist is being tracked behind you and a new vehicle is detected in the distance.
