ELEMNT ACE, BOLT 3, or ROAM 3 first time onboarding

The article describes pairing a Gen 3 ELEMNT GPS bike computer (ELEMNT ACE, BOLT 3, or ROAM 3) to the Wahoo app to prepare it for first use. Note -- Gen 3 ELEMNT computer use the Wahoo app, not the ELEMNT app used with previous generations of computers.  Images present the ELEMNT ACE, but the process is the same for ROAM 3 and BOLT 3

Requirements

  • A phone capable of running the current version of the Wahoo app for iOS or Android.  Currently requires iOS 16+ / Android 10+.
  • The Wahoo app for iOS or Android.
  • An active data connection (cell or Wi-Fi) for that phone.
  • An available 2.4 or 5Ghz Wi-Fi network (for immediate firmware and map updates)
    • If firmware is not updated, the onboarding process cannot complete.

Semi-automated first time onboarding

  1. Turn on the ELEMNT computer by holding the power button on the left side of the unit.
  2. Scan the QR code that appears with your phone's camera and select the Wahoo link. This will...

1. Phone pairing

If the Wahoo app is already installed on your phone, it will open the Wahoo app and automatically pair the ELEMNT ACE to the Wahoo app (not the ELEMNT app).

      • If the Wahoo app is not installed, it will prompt you to download the Wahoo app and login with your existing Wahoo username and password, or create a new username/password.
        • Note: If you already have a Wahoo account (used with a previous ELEMNT computer or the SYSTM app), we would suggest using that, so that your ride/activity history will be synced.
      • You must authorize permissions (Pairing and Notifications) as requested to ensure proper ACE-Wahoo app communication during normal use.  Failure to do so will result in feature limitations or other difficulties in use.

2. Connect to Wi-Fi

Prompt you to connect your ACE to a local Wi-Fi network.

      • Connecting the ACE to a Wi-Fi network is required in order to update the firmware before first use.
      • In order to be compatible, a Wi-Fi network must be
        • 2.4 or 5 Ghz frequency,
        • set to a channel, 1-9,
        • authenticated via simple text password, not a secondary splash page, and
        • not have MAC address filtering/whitelisting enabled.
      • If a network is saved and connected, it will appear immediately below the ELEMNT Wi-Fi toggle with a check mark beside it.
      • If a network is saved, but not connected, it will appear just below the ELEMNT Wi-Fi toggle, but without a check mark.

3. Install firmware updates

Update the computer to the current firmware.

      • This automated process will result in the ACE restarting multiple times as the firmware is updated to the current version. The firmware must be updated in order for the computer to communicate fully with the Wahoo app.  The computer cannot be used without first being updated.

4. Download maps

Prompt you to add/update any desired local maps.

For ACE and ROAM 3

  • If not automatically skipped, manually continue through this step without any adjustments as the ACE and ROAM ship with updated versions of all available world maps with plenty of room for route files and completed ride files.
  • Your ELEMNT ACE or ROAM 3 is ready for customization.

For BOLT 3

Because the BOLT 3 has only 32GB of storage, compared to ACE and ROAM 3's 64GB, but BOLT 3 also supports many of the same on-board routing functions, all Summit features, and robust color maps, it ships with most, but not all, of the world's maps loaded on the device.  At this step, you should confirm that your local geography is on the computer, and if not, add it by selecting:

  1. Add map
  2. Your region
  3. Your local geography.
    • This will queue the area for download. Downloads/installe
  4. When you have downloaded your area, select Continue.

Note, the maps already downloaded on the BOLT 3 were chosen by relative population density of our known customer base. For similar reasons, the United States are segmented from the rest of North America for quick access.

Troubleshooting

  1. If you are having difficulties, you can manually initiate the ELEMNT computer pairing process in the Wahoo app using the steps in Pair an ELEMNT ACE, BOLT 3, or ROAM 3 to the Wahoo app.
  2. Please note -- ACE setup requires:
    • A phone capable of running the current version of the Wahoo app (not ELEMNT app) for iOS or Android.  The Wahoo app currently requires iOS 16+ / Android 10+
    • An active data connection (cell or Wi-Fi) for that phone.
    • An available 2.4 or 5Ghz Wi-Fi network (for immediate firmware and map updates).
  3. All Wahoo app permissions and device-app permissions must be accepted during the Wahoo app setup and pairing process for the ELEMNT to properly communicate with the app and your phone.
