What is Summit?
Summit is a group of climbing-oriented features leveraging our computers' expanded color, map data, and processing capacity to help the rider identify and anticipate climbs on the road ahead.
The feature set uses elevation data built into map files to provide anticipated grades and extended climbs. Grades are categorized by a percentage range and assigned a color. The colors are then used in a grade data field, an available elevation profile view, and chevrons on the map page to demonstrate the severity of upcoming climbs.
The feature set also leverages that same elevation data to generate a list of climbs along either
- an entire route OR
- the next 2 miles / 2 kilometers of road in the direction you are currently traveling.

Route-less Climb Detection
In addition to identifying climbs along a route, ELEMNT ACE, BOLT 3, and ROAM 3 can also detect climbs along the road ahead without a route loaded.
The computers use the installed maps and elevation data to detect the road that that you are riding on, then calculate the elevation profile ahead, and use the profile to detect climbs. After a climb is detected, you will be alerted when approaching the start of the climb and it will be appear in the upcoming climbs list on the Climbs page.
If you make a turn onto a new road to continue a climb, the computer will recalculate and extend the climb. If you make a turn onto a flat or downhill section, the climb will be recorded as complete at the point of the turn. When a detected climb is completed, it will be added to the completed climbs list on the Climbs List page.
On predictive limitations: Because there is no route loaded, the computer can only predict the topography ahead based on the road you are currently riding on. This can present some limitations - for example if a popular climb has several turns, the computer will only detect the profile of the climb up to the first turn. Once the rider makes a turn onto a new road, the climb will be recalculated and extended, but you will see the climb page values and elevation profile ‘jump’ to the profile on the new road. To prevent this experience, we would suggest loading a predefined route containing that climb.
Additionally, due to the accuracy limitations of off-road data, route-less climb detection will not work off-road.
Requirements
- Current firmware
- Current local maps
Features
- Elevation remaining on a route added to the route cue sheet
- Grade data field with grade-categorized color background
-
Elevation profile preview with grade-categorized colors available on Elevation and Map pages
- 2 mi/2km unrouted
- 2mi/2km, 20mi/20km, routed distance ToGo, routed Total when following a route

- Climbs list
- Summit Live Segments
Remaining elevation of route added to route cue sheet
When a route is loaded, the elevation remaining in the route is added to the cue sheet subpage of the Maps page.
Grade data field with grade-categorized color background
The Grade (slope background) data field offers a color background to match the color of current grade. It can be added to any page with customizable data fields. It can be found in the Climbing > Climbing section of the available customizable data fields in the Wahoo app. See Customize workout profiles and pages for ELEMNT ACE, BOLT 3, or ROAM 3.
Elevation profile preview with grade-categorized colors
With a route loaded, Roam v1/v2 and Bolt v2 will provide a colored elevation profile, subdivided in 10m increments, corresponding to the grade color categorization above, of the next 2 miles / 2 kilometers on the Summit Segment, elevation, or map page (if Show Elevation Profile is toggled on). On the elevation page, the profile view can be adjusted using the side buttons from the default 2 mi / 2 km to 20 mi / km, distance remaining on the route, or the whole route's elevation profile. Additionally, colors have been added to the elevation profile in Strava Live Segments.
Note: The route-less elevation preview only presents the elevation ahead of the road you are currently riding on, and cannot anticipate turns you might wish to make. In places where the road you are currently riding has less than 2 mi / 2 km remaining before a turn or name change, the computer will show the topography remaining on that road section. The computer may take up to 90 seconds to recalculate / regenerate the new topo preview after a turn.
Route chevrons with grade-categorized colors on map
With or without a route loaded, ELEMNT ACE, BOLT 3, or ROAM 3 will display colored chevrons on the map page indicating the location and gradation of a climb, corresponding to the grade color categorization defined above.
Climbs List page
With a route loaded, ELEMNT ACE, BOLT 3, and ROAM 3 will detect significant climbs along the route and generate a list of upcoming climbs.
This list of detected climbs will be provided on a new Climbs List page. Initially all upcoming climbs will be listed with distance to climb, length of climb, and average grade of climb. As a climb is begun, that climb will be listed as 'In Progress', and later 'Completed'. This page will exist as a subpage within the Elevation page flow and you can toggle between the two using the left button on the face of the computer.
Summit Live Segments
Summit Live Segment notifications
As you approach a climb, you will be shown notifications at the bottom of the screen alerting you to the distance to climb, length of climb, and average grade of climb. If not on the climb page, notifications will also be provided for starting the climb, approaching the end of the climb, and finishing the climb. This setting can be toggled off in the ELEMNT app in Settings > Summit Segments > Notifications on other pages.
Summit Live Segments
Once you've started a climb, a new in-climb page (Summit Segments Live) will appear, with new data fields for:
- time elapsed in the climb
- vertical distance to go
- distance to go
- current grade
- estimated total time to complete climb
- the elevation profile of the next 2 mi / km
When enabled, you will be able to toggle between this page, the Climbs List page, and the Elevation page using the left button on the face of the computer.
The Summit Live Segments page is set to automatically appear immediately before a climb. This automatic page change can be toggled off in the Wahoo app in Workout profile settings > Summit Segments > Automatic page change.
The data fields of this page can be replaced in the Wahoo app > Workout profile settings > Pages > Summit Segments > Summit Segments Live. ACE has up to 9 customizable fields, with 7 for BOLT 3 and ROAM 3. Also, these data fields can be added to other pages. Please note, they will only provide data when a climb is detected. The data fields can be found in Climbing > Summit Segments Live. For more details on the process of page data field customization, please see Customize workout profiles and pages for ELEMNT ACE, BOLT 3, or ROAM 3.
Climb detection customization
Climbs are classified as small, medium, and large by their average grade and distance. Uphill sections with less than a 3% average grade OR less than 250 meters in length are not classified/defined as climbs.
You can set which climbs (all, medium and large, or only large) are identified in the Summit Segments feature described below in the Wahoo app workout profile > Summit Segments > Climb Detection.
