How can I retrieve a ride file completed on/after Sunday, Aug 17 from an ELEMNT, BOLT 1, or ROAM 1 and fix it?
If you completed a ride on/after Sunday, August 17 and had not yet updated your firmware to one of the following versions:
- ROAM 1 – WR24 - 17055
- BOLT 1 – WB17 - 17055
- ELEMNT - currently in production
your computer may have written that ride file as having been completed in 2006. If a ride was written to the computer as having been completed in 2006, it may have synced to the ELEMNT app, but is now located at the bottom of your ride history (in 2006).
It is also possible to retrieve a completed ride file by connecting your ELEMNT to a desktop or laptop computer via a USB data cable. Ride files are written beginning with a YYYY-MM-DD format.
Once a file has been retrieved, you may be able reset the date of recording using a FIT file tool.
This may create a viable file, but because GPS uses time to locate satellites, the time change created by the legacy GPS timing code during the ride recording may have created significant GPS errors that cannot be corrected. We cannot promise that your ride file can be recovered into a usable state.
To locate the file in your ELEMNT app
- Navigate to the History tab.
- Select Filter (iOS) or 3 lines (Android) in the top right corner.
- Scroll to the bottom of the Filter screen to Date.
- Select Year and then 2006.
- Select Cycling then Apply X results at the bottom of the screen.
- Select the ride to open the details page.
- Select the upload icon (iOS) or 3 dots, then Upload workout (Android) in the top right corner.
- Select Share file to... and select your email client.
-
Email the file to yourself and download it onto your computer's desktop.
To retrieve the file from your ELEMNT computer via USB
- Connect your ELEMNT, BOLT, or ROAM to a computer via a USB data cable.
-
Locate the ride file in the computer directory exports folder.
- Windows -- Open File Explorer and find your computer
- MacOS -- Open your preferred MTP client (ex. OpenMTP) and locate your computer
- Linux -- Open your native file explorer app or libmtp
- Locate a ride file that begins with 2006-01...
-
Copy the file to your computer's desktop.
To adjust the time and date you recorded the ride
- Open a web browser on your computer to https://www.fitfiletools.com/
- Select Time Adjuster.
- Drop the 2006 ride file into the box below Step 1.
- Select the correct date and approximate time.
- Select Go!
- The time adjusted file will be downloaded into your browser's downloads folder as fitfiletools.fit
You can now view or upload the file in your preferred third party app's web interface or email it yourself again to download it on your phone and import it into their phone app.
That file may still exhibit speed or location data errors due to the GPS time issue. If so, there is no way to resolve these after the fact.
