Using Wi-Fi with a KICKR trainer, BIKE, or RUN

This article covers using KICKR Wi-Fi (KICKR v6, KICKR MOVE, BIKE v2, BIKE SHIFT, and KICKR RUN) features for firmware updates and with a Mac or Windows PC.

Compatibility

Wahoo trainers

  • KICKR v6 (2022)
  • KICKR MOVE (2023)
  • KICKR BIKE v2 (2022)
  • KICKR BIKE SHIFT (2023)
  • KICKR RUN (2024)

Apps

  • Fulgaz - All platforms
  • TrainerRoad - All platforms
  • Wahoo SYSTM - Windows and MacOS platforms
  • Zwift - All platforms

Requirements

  • a 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi connection, channels 1-13
    • (802.11 b/g/n, 20 and 40 MHz channel widths)
    • For firmware updates, if a static Wi-Fi access point is unavailable, a phone with a data connection can be used as a temporary Wi-Fi hotspot
    • Note: In the case of some routers, the controlling device (computer) must be connected on the same subnet as the trainer (2.4GHz) in order for the trainer to be visible to the controlling device. This is a structural limitation of the router.
Routers identified with this limitation: Century Link C4000XG

  • the Wahoo app for iOS or Android
    • for initial setup

Benefits

  • Once set up on a given Wi-Fi network , a KICKR reconnects automatically.
  • Firmware is updated in the background when the device is not in use.
  • Wi-Fi connectivity offers a more robust connection solution for training in your home. Wi-Fi offers lower latency and higher throughput, expanding the capabilities of what our devices can do.

Setup

  1. Once the trainer, bike, or treadmill  is paired to the Wahoo app for iOS or Android , select Devices > KICKR (or BIKE, RUN, etc).
  2. Under Wi-Fi, select Select Wi-Fi Network and select your desired Wi-Fi network from the 'Available Networks'.
  3. Enter the Wi-Fi network password and select Connect.
  4. Once connected, the Network page will appear confirming that the trainer will now be discoverable by supported applications on that same network and provide the trainer's IP and Mac address.
  • If a static Wi-Fi network is not available, a phone with a data connection can be used as a temporary Wi-Fi hotspot. The hotspot will have to be set to 2.4Ghz. (Most will default to 5Ghz.)
    • Enable the hotspot
    • Select the hotspot Wi-Fi network ID and enter the password.
    • Check the device's settings Devices > KICKR for a firmware update.
    • Note: in some cases, a second phone may be required to provide the hotspot.

Firmware updates

Once connected to a Wi-Fi network, firmware updates are automatically downloaded and installed on the Wi-Fi enabled Wahoo trainers, bikes, and treadmills, provided the device is not actively connected to an app. If an update is available in the device's settings in the Wahoo app, a firmware update can also be manually triggered. The update will then occur via Wi-Fi.
