What type of trainer can I use with the SYSTM app?

This is an overview of the different types of trainers that can be used with the SYSTM app. To find out if your trainer is compatible with the app, check the Connect your Trainer (Compatibility Tool).

 A smart controllable trainer/stationary bike

These trainers will connect to the app using Bluetooth or ANT+.  They are fully interactive and the resistance can be controlled by the app.  These trainers will function in ERG and Level Mode.

A smart non-controllable trainer/stationary bike

These trainers will connect to the app and transmit data, but the resistance cannot be automatically controlled by the app.  Manually changing the resistance will be done by shifting gears, or adjusting the tension (stationary bike).

A classic trainer with a power meter

The app will connect to the power meter to transmit data.  Resistance will not be automatically controlled by the app.  Manually changing the resistance will be done by shifting gears on the bike.  The trainer may have different resistance curves available, depending on the make and model.

A classic trainer with a speed sensor configured for Virtual Watts.

The app will connect to the speed sensor to collect data.  Virtual Watts will need to be configured within the app settings for power data to be available.  The app does not control the trainer's resistance.  Manually changing the resistance will be done by shifting gears on the bike.  The trainer may have different resistance curves available, depending on the make and model.  Virtual Watts are power estimates and may not be comparable to power measured with a power meter.

A stationary bike that doesn't connect

Stationary bikes that are not supported by the app connections can still be used for training, using RPE.  For more information see How to use an unsupported stationary bike with SYSTM
