ELEMNT ACE, BOLT 3, and ROAM 3 computers will display Custom Waypoints or Points of Interest (POIs) that have been added to/included in route files that are cloud synced from third party route services * (komoot, RideWithGPS, and Strava) on the map, in the route cue sheet, and on a new Waypoints page.
In each place, the majority of custom waypoints or POIs will present a unique icon to identify the waypoint/POI type, the waypoint/POI name, and, when selected, provide distance and elevation to the waypoint/POI and the customized description or comment. Because each third party route provider has a slightly different set of POI icons/concepts, we have done our best to create an inclusive set of 50 or so icons that are similar, but not identical, to each of the three providers' icon sets. See Custom POI / Waypoint Mapping below for the icons. In all cases, the name and custom text provided when the waypoint/POI was created are passed through to the computer.
In cases where there is no matching custom icon, the generic Wahoo waypoint icon will be used, again with the custom waypoint/POI name and description text.
*Routes downloaded and imported via the Wahoo app will not currently produce matching custom icons.
Definition
Wahoo defines a custom waypoint as a catch-all term for the varied types of points of interest, either generated from base map data or created by a user in the route provider's route builder interface that can be incorporated into a route file for export to a GPS bike computer like the ELEMNT.
The base map points of interest that appear throughout the route builder interfaces but are not specifically included in a route to be synced/exported during the route creation process are not transmitted with the file, and so will not appear on the map or other screens.
Requirements
- An ELEMNT ACE, BOLT 3, or ROAM 3
- Firmware version 301724 or later
- A route file synced from
- komoot, with points of interest from komoot's map layer included as waypoints along the route OR
-
RideWithGPS, with points of interest from RideWithGPS's map layer or custom waypoints along the route, or custom POI near the route* OR
- *Note: a custom POI must be included in the route file for it to appear on the ELEMNT. POIs from RideWithGPS's base maps/route creator are not universally included.
- Strava, with custom waypoints created along the route OR
- * If using Strava, You will be required to delete and then re-sync your route library post firmware update, so that custom waypoints are included when re-synced. For details on that process, see below in Setup 2a.
Setup
1. Include POIs or create Custom Waypoints / POIs in a route file
The capacity to and methods for including POIs or creating custom waypoints and/or POIs for inclusion in a route differ by third party route provider.
Komoot
Komoot only supports the inclusion of existing POIs in the Komoot route builder as waypoints into routes. You cannot create new custom waypoints or customize existing POI names or details.
For details on including Komoot POIs into a route, see Komoot's article on
- Planning Tours using POIs (Points of Interest) (waypoint type directory).
RideWithGPS
RideWithGPS supports the inclusion and customization of existing POIs in the route builder as on-route custom waypoints, or off-route POIs, and. the creation of new custom waypoints into routes.
For details on creating RideWithGPS custom POIs/waypoints for inclusion on routes, see RideWithGPS's articles on
- Highlights, Points of Interest, and Waypoints
- Points of Interest (POI) (POI/Waypoint type directory)
- Waypoints
Strava
You must use the Strava desktop browser instance to integrate POIs as waypoints or create custom waypoints on a route. POIs searched and selected to be included as waypoints in a route must be customized (select the waypoint a second time to pull up the Customize button) in order to appear on ELEMNT computers.
For details on including existing POIs in the Strava route builder or creating Custom Waypoints in Strava for inclusion on routes, see Strava's articles on
- Points of Interest and Start Points
- Custom Waypoints on Strava Routes*
- Strava Maps Glossary (POI/Waypoint type directory)
2. Sync routes to an ELEMNT ACE, BOLT 3, or ROAM 3
Generally the best way to import a route onto your ELEMNT computer is to authorize a connection to the third party route provider in the your Wahoo app and then sync your complete route library to the computer via Wi-Fi. This allows you to manage your route library in one place in the third party app/interface and then just periodically sync the computer via Wi-Fi to add/remover routes. These two processes are described in the following two articles:
- Authorize an app partner to sync routes, planned workouts, completed rides, or segments
- Routes - Sync from a third party route provider app / service [ELEMNT ACE, BOLT 3, or ROAM 3]
*For Strava users after updating to version 301724 to enable the custom waypoints integration
Strava routes synced prior to the update do not contain custom waypoints. In order to ensure that synced routes do contain custom waypoints, you need to:
-
Deauthorize Strava in the Wahoo app > Today tab > Account > Authorized apps
- Navigate in the Wahoo app to the Plan tab > My Routes to confirm that no Strava linked routes appear in the routes list. Once confirmed no Strava routes are present...
-
Complete a Wi-Fi sync of the computer's routes to ensure they are deleted.
- While in range of a saved Wi-Fi network on your ELEMNT ACE, BOLT 3, or ROAM 3, sync your routes by navigating on your computer to Settings > Ride page > Routes > Sync.
- Re-authorize Strava in the Wahoo app.
- Confirm the routes reappear in Wahoo app > Plan tab > My Routes.
- Complete another Wi-Fi sync of the routes on the computer to reconstitute them.
3. Load a route with custom waypoints on the ELEMNT computer.
See Routes with ELEMNT ACE, BOLT 3, and ROAM 3 for how to load a route.
Use custom waypoints
The feature set for custom waypoint on the computers is fairly simple. Once a route with viable custom waypoints are loaded onto an ELEMNT ACE, BOLT 3, or ROAM 3, the custom waypoints will appear on the map page, in the cue sheet, and on a new Waypoints page. They will be treated like other waypoints that identify turns and will generate a notification pop-up as you approach them in a similar interval
On the map page
All custom waypoints associated with the route loaded will appear on the map page. When the touchscreen is unlocked, the you can tap on a waypoint to expand its details, including its name, any description or comment attached to it, and your current distance and elevation difference from it.
In a route cue sheet
Custom waypoints will appear in the cue sheet like other cues, but with their type icon and name instead of the turn directions at the point they occur in the route. You can select them using the middle SELECT button (or the. touch screen for ACE and ROAM 3) to expand to see any related notes.
On the Waypoints page
In order to reduce the scrolling necessary to identify the waypoints in a route, when a route that contains custom waypoints is loaded, a Waypoints page is added to the page stack immediately after the map page.
Route to a Waypoint
From any Waypoint's expanded details panel, you are offered the opportunity to route to that waypoint from your current location immediately. Selecting ROUTE TO (or the on screen button for ACE and ROAM 3) will cause the computer to generate the routing engine's best perceived route direct to that waypoint's location on the map, disregarding your prior course to that point in the route.
Custom POI / Waypoint Mapping
Wahoo POI / Waypoint icons are mapped to third party route providers custom waypoint / POI types in the following ways.
The waypoint type identified in the Strava, RideWithGPS, and komoot columns should produce the corresponding icon in the Wahoo column on your ELEMNT ACE, BOLT 3, or ROAM 3.
