Button and touchscreen control for ELEMNT ACE

We have sought to enable a 'best of both worlds' approach to device control with the addition of a touchscreen. Most, but not all, user interface controls can still be accessed through buttons-only.  Most legacy ELEMNT button control behaviors are retained. Occasionally the addition of certain features mean that a button is not available because all available buttons are already occupied with core functions.

The touch screen supports basic tapping, scrolling, swiping on most pages, and two finger pinch/spread zoom functionality on the map screen when unlocked. For more details, see below.

Left side button

Power / Settings menu button

  • left side button
  • Hold to power the computer on / off.
  • Tap to access the Settings menus.
  • Hold for 10+ seconds to force restart the computer

Front buttons

Left - History / Current page submenu / Lap

  • When in a ride
    • On the primary workout page
      • Use to start a new Lap
    • On the elevation and map pages
      • Use to toggle between subpages or submenus for that page
        • ex toggle between the Elevation and Climbs pages or toggle between routes or map layers menus on the Map page.
  • When paused
    • Use to Stop a ride.

Center - Start / Select

  • Use to START, PAUSE, or RESUME a workout, or Select or Toggle a setting in the Settings menu or other menus.

Right - Page change 

  • Use to cycle through the Workout Data, Elevation / Climb, Navigation / Map, Lap and other contextual pages in the regular page stack.
  • Use to cycle through the Ride, Device Settings, and My Sensors pages in the Settings menu page stack.

  • right side up / down buttons
  • Use to
    • scroll when in a multi-line menu or
    • zoom to see greater or fewer data fields on a data page,
    • zoom or more or less of the map.

Touchscreen

For the best experience, slow down and exaggerate your motions when engaging the touchscreen. 

The touchscreen offers several universally available controls and a few that only exist for map navigation when unlocked. 

Universal touch controls

Tap to select

On Settings pages or the Map page, tap button panels to select or toggle the item.

Press + drag to scroll

On pages with menus that extend below the screen, press with a single finger and drag up or down to move the menu in that direction.

Swipe up/down to open/close the Settings menus

In addition to tapping the left side button, the Settings pages can be opened by swiping downward, starting anywhere in the top status panel (clock, temperature, phone/GPS/battery charging status), just below the upper bezel.

The Settings menus can be closed from any of the Settings pages by swiping upward, starting in the outer left or right third of the bottom panel used for the left and right front button labels

Swipe left/right to navigate forward/back in the page stack

Swiping left or right from any page will navigate forward or back in the current page stack (Ride or Settings menus)

Tap the footer to ring a digital bell

Once a ride is started in an outdoor workout profile, single-tap the middle of the large footer at the bottom of any in-ride page between the front button labels and the front buttons (or double-tap anywhere on the main Workout data screen) for a friendly 'ding-ding'.

Unlocked map screen controls

When the map page lock button is pressed and the lock shows as unlocked, the following controls are available:

One finger press + drag to move the map

Pressing and dragging a point on the map in any direction will drag the map in that direction.

Two finger pinch, spread, twist to zoom or rotate the map

You can use two fingers to pinch to zoom out, spread to zoom in, or rotate the map.  The map can be reset to a north is up orientation by tapping the compass button.  The arrow icon denoting your position on the map can be reset by tapping the cross-hairs button.
