Set up an ELEMNT GPS computer

Unless otherwise noted, the following statements apply to all ELEMNT GPS computers, including ELEMNT, BOLT v1, BOLT v2, ROAM v1, and ROAM v2.

Charge an ELEMNT computer

Use a wall charger / adapter, or a powered USB port to charge the computer.

  • a wall charger/adapter
    • 5 volt, 2+ amp
    • ideally a non-Apple charger
  • a powered USB port

Do not charge if there is moisture or debris in the charger cable or charging port in the ELEMNT computer. Doing so risks damage to the charging cable and/or computer.

Pair an ELEMNT computer to the ELEMNT app

ELEMNT computers use the ELEMNT app for iOS or Android to set up and customize various settings, features, and connections to third party apps/services. Functionality is extremely limited without it.

Connect an ELEMNT computer to Wi-Fi

ELEMNT, BOLT, and ROAM all require a direct internet-connected Wi-Fi connection for automatic workout uploads, firmware updates, route or map downloads, Strava Live Segment synchronization and other internet-enabled features

Update ELEMNT computer firmware

Once paired to a local Wi-Fi network, you can initiate a firmware update on the ELEMNT computer itself.  Maintaining current firmware is the best way to ensure the computer is functioning as designed.
For the steps for manual firmware updates,

The computer will also automatically do a Wi-Fi check and download any available firmware updates on computer warm up (if in range of a saved Wi-Fi network). Updates will be installed automatically as the computer is shutting down (to prevent delaying use on start up).

Add, update, or delete Maps on an ELEMNT computer

Up to date local maps are required for proper navigation functions. Local maps will need to be updated periodically for full navigation functionality.  Some computers lack space to store all of the world's maps simultaneously, and so some unused maps from a place far from you may need to be deleted to make room.  All maps can always be re-downloaded later for free.

Pair a sensor to an ELEMNT computer

ELEMNT GPS computers track speed and distance via the onboard GPS receiver, as well as elevation and temperature using the onboard barometric altimeter, for more precise and consistent speed readings in more challenging GPS environments, pair a speed speed sensor, or various other sensors or accessories (heart rate monitor, power meter, ANT+ radar) for extended data gathering and functionality.

Customize pages on an ELEMNT computer

Most pages (screens) of ELEMNT GPS computers contain customizable data fields, meaning that data fields can be added, changed, moved, or removed.

Authorize a third party app for route or planned workout syncing or completed ride sharing

ELEMNT, BOLT, and ROAM have the ability to [1] import routes or structured workout plans and [2] share completed ride data with various third party apps / services (like Komoot, RideWithGPS, Strava, TrainingPeaks, and others). In order to enable these functions, you need to connect the third party service to your

LED and sound functions of ELEMNT computers

ELEMNT, BOLT, and ROAM use top and side LEDs and basic sounds to alert you for navigation, notifications, and other uses.
