Smart light control [ELEMNT]

Second generation ELEMNT computers can control ANT+ connected smart lights.  Users can turn all connected lights on/off using a line item: Bike Lights in the Settings menu. Users can toggle between the proprietary light modes for each light in the sensor details page for that light.  Users can set the ELEMNT computer to turn all lights on/off with the ELEMNT in the ELEMNT companion app.

Compatibility

  • BOLT v2 or ROAM v2

Requirements

  • ELEMNT BOLT v2 or ROAM v2 Firmware version: 16764+
  • ELEMNT app version 1.79.1+ (iOS) or 1.76.1.2 (Android)
  • The ANT+ light set in pairing mode before pairing to the ELEMNT.

Supported Lights

  • Lights compatible with the ANT+ Bike Lights device profile
    • Bontrager/Trek RT lights
    • Garmin Varia lights

Enable the feature

  1. Ensure firmware is up to date on version 16764+
  2. Ensure the light is on and in pairing mode.
    • For Bontrager/Trek lights --
      • The light is shipped with ANT+ and Bluetooth wireless connectivity enabled.
        To disable, with the light off, press and hold the power button for 15 seconds.
        The main LED will flash once at 8 seconds, and again at 15 seconds. Release
        the button after the second flash. 
      • You may need to "disable" using the steps above, check for pairing availability, and then "re-enable" using the same steps to confirm which pairing state the light is in.
    • For Garmin Varia lights --
      • While the Varia™ device is turned off, hold the device key for 2 seconds to enter pairing mode.  The status LED flashes purple, and the taillight turns on. The device is in pairing mode for 5 minutes or until you press the device key.
  3. Pair the smart light to the ELEMNT computer.
    • Navigate to the Menu page on the computer (tap the left side button).
    • Scroll down to the Sensors section.
    • Select Add new using the middle bottom button.
    • Select the light from the list of sensors that appear.

Toggle all lights on/off

  1. Navigate to the Menu page on the computer (tap the left side button).
  2. Scroll down to the Bike Lights line item.
  3. Toggle on/off using the middle bottom button.

Change individual light settings

  1. Navigate to the Settings menu on the computer (tap the left side button).
  2. Scroll down to that light under Sensors.
  3. Select the light using the middle bottom button.
  4. Scroll down to Light Mode.
  5. Toggle between available light settings using the right front button.
  6. Return to Menu page using left front button.

NOTE: available light settings will vary by light based on presets offered by that light.

 

Set ELEMNT to auto-control bike lights

When toggled to ON in the ELEMNT app, the ELEMNT will turn the lights on to their last chosen setting when a ride is started, and off when a ride recording is ended.

  1. Navigate in the ELEMNT app to Settings > Sensors > Auto control bike lights.
  2. Toggle the feature on.

Troubleshooting

  1. Confirm that you have a BOLT version 2 (WFCC5) or ROAM version 2 (WFCC6).
  2. Unpair/forget the light
  3. Restart the ELEMNT.
  4. Ensure the light is in pairing mode:
    • For Bontrager/Trek lights --
      • The light is shipped with ANT+ and Bluetooth wireless connectivity enabled.
        To disable, with the light off, press and hold the power button for 15 seconds.
        The main LED will flash once at 8 seconds, and again at 15 seconds. Release
        the button after the second flash. 
      • You may need to "disable" using the steps above, check for pairing availability, and then "re-enable" using the same steps to confirm which pairing state the light is in.
    • For Garmin Varia lights --
      • While the Varia™ device is turned off, hold the device key for 2 seconds to enter pairing mode.  The status LED flashes purple, and the taillight turns on. The device is in pairing mode for 5 minutes or until you press the device key.
  5. Re-pair the light as a sensor

This may be required after ELEMNT firmware updates.
