The ELEMNT, BOLT, and ROAM can control Wahoo smart trainers (KICKR, MOVE, CORE, SNAP, ROLLR, BIKE, and SHIFT) in several resistance modes. It is also possible to pair your trainer with a third party app to view and record metrics in passive mode.
Setup
- Pair your smart trainer to the ELEMNT, BOLT, or ROAM like any other sensor.
- Navigate to the Menu page (left side button) and set the Location to Indoor.
- Begin pedaling and the computer will automatically change the Location to KICKR.
- If the KICKR Control Page does not appear automatically, confirm the Location is set to KICKR, press the left side Menu button to return to the page stack, and select Page (right front button) to find the KICKR Control page. The KICKR Control Page enables various resistance control modes of the trainer.
Control modes for Wahoo smart trainers
Passive
This mode allows your ELEMNT, BOLT, or ROAM to be used as a mounted display when riding a smart trainer paired to a 3rd party app. The cyclocomputer displays and independently records metrics from connected sensors during a workout. This is the default mode when entering smart trainer control mode.
*Important note on Passive mode: Since this method pairs the ELEMNT, BOLT, or ROAM to the trainer via Bluetooth, connecting a KICKR prior to v4 (2018) or a SNAP to another app will require an ANT+ connection to that app. To connect to another app via Bluetooth, ensure the ELEMNT App is fully closed and unpaired, connect your trainer to the other app, then follow the steps provided above to connect the ELEMNT, BOLT, or ROAM to the trainer via ANT+.
Level
Select a difficulty level from 1 to 10 with a progressive resistance curve - the faster you pedal the harder it gets.
ERG
ERG mode allows you to set a target power wattage and increases resistance to maintain a constant power output regardless of cadence or speed. In ERG mode, there's no hiding or costing as resistance increases to maintain power output when cadence or speed drops.
Resistance*
Just like adjusting the brake in spin class, resistance mode allows fine-tuned direct control of brake resistance from 0 to 100% in 5% increments. Brake resistance remains constant regardless of speed until manually changed.
*Not available for BIKE or BIKE SHIFT.
Route:
Route mode allows you to recreate rides or simulate a route on your KICKR with support of terrain features like hills and valleys.
To load a route for simulation:
- Once on the KICKR Control Page...
- Press MODE until ROUTE - SELECT A ROUTE TO SIMULATE is shown at the top of the display.
- Press the center button to select the route you wish to simulate indoors.
Planned Workout
Planned workout mode allows you to follow an uploaded planned workout, according to the resistance design of the workout. In most cases this will be ERG mode, but if there are no power targets, the trainer will not provide resistance.
Other Trainers
The ELEMNT, BOLT, and ROAM can control most ANT+ FE-C enabled 3rd-party trainers. Please check with your trainer's manufacturer for ANT+ FE-C compatibility and functionality.
